Shredded paper: how to get rid of it

Last reviewed 21 October 2026 · General guidance for the UK · Council rules vary

Step by step

1. Check it is empty and clean. Food left in packaging can spoil a whole load.
2. Put it in your household recycling if your council accepts it.
3. If you are not sure, look at your council’s list of what goes in which bin.

Check your council’s rules

What goes in which bin, bulky collections and recycling centre rules are set by your local council. Find your local council on GOV.UK ↗
