Abandoned vehicles: how to report them
How to tell if a car is abandoned, how to report it to the council, and getting rid of your own old car legally.
Signs a car may be abandoned
No tax, flat tyres, broken windows, rubbish inside or a car that has not moved for a long time may be signs. A car simply parked outside your house for a while is not necessarily abandoned.
How to report it
Use the GOV.UK service to report an abandoned vehicle to your council. Give the location, make, colour and registration if you can.
Scrapping your own car
Use an authorised treatment facility, sometimes called a scrapyard or vehicle dismantler, and get a certificate of destruction. Tell the DVLA you have scrapped it.
