How to recycle coffee pods and capsules

Check your pod brand, separate materials and use the correct take-back bag or collection point.

Last reviewed 21 October 2026 · Applies to UK household guidance; collection arrangements vary by council

Quick answer. Used pods normally need a dedicated scheme. Check the brand and material, then follow that scheme’s current instructions rather than putting capsules loose into mixed household recycling.

Check your brand and postcode

Start with the pod manufacturer or your council’s coffee-pod information. Availability can include drop-off points or a dedicated collection. A nearby scheme may accept only certain pod types, so check before collecting a large bag.

Keep aluminium and plastic apart

Podback services separate aluminium pods from plastic ones. Use the correct scheme-supplied bags where required; some council drop-offs accept loose pods in separate containers. Follow the instructions for your actual service.

Do not add unrelated rubbish

Keep outer cardboard boxes, milk bottles and wrappers out of the pod bag. Do not assume that a “compostable” capsule belongs in a food caddy: the food collector must explicitly accept it.

Make the return manageable

Keep a small container beside the machine and empty it into the correct return bag. Recheck the return location before a special journey. If you change capsule brand, check compatibility again.
