DIY waste: rubble, tiles and plasterboard

Plan disposal before a small renovation: what to ask about DIY waste limits, separate materials and waste produced by a tradesperson.

Last reviewed 21 October 2026 · Applies to England; check local collection arrangements

Quick answer. In England, qualifying small-scale household DIY waste can be deposited without a disposal charge at council recycling centres. That does not mean unlimited building waste or every vehicle is accepted.

Before taking anything to the tip

The household DIY-waste charging rules changed at the end of 2023. The exemption has conditions and quantity limits; larger loads and work done by a business need separate consideration. Check your council’s current policy for the material, amount and visit frequency.

Ask about booking, proof of residence and van or trailer access as well as charges. An exemption from a disposal charge is not an exemption from site entry rules.

Keep materials identifiable

Ask the site or skip supplier specifically about rubble, plasterboard, timber and packaging. Do not assume that plasterboard belongs in the same container as bricks, or hide an excluded material in a mixed bag.

If a builder is doing the work

Waste from commercial construction activity is business waste. Agree in writing who will arrange its collection and lawful disposal. Do not assume a contractor can use your household recycling-centre entitlement for waste from their work.

Compare a collection with a skip

For a quote, provide photos, material types, approximate quantities and access details. Ask about weight limits and excluded items, not just the container’s size. See skip hire versus man and van and our suspected asbestos guide.
