What goes in which bin?
Why recycling rules differ between areas, how to check yours, and the common mistakes that spoil a whole bin.
Why it varies
Councils use different collection systems and sorting facilities, so a pot that goes in recycling in one area may go in the general bin next door. Always check your own council’s list.
Common mistakes
- Recycling in plastic bags, when your council wants it loose.
- Food left in tubs and jars.
- Nappies, textiles or electricals in the recycling.
- Batteries in any household bin. They can start fires in bin lorries.
Find your rules and bin day
Use GOV.UK to find your council, then look for its bins and recycling pages. Many councils let you enter your postcode to see collection days.
