Wood and timber: how to get rid of it

Last reviewed 21 October 2026 · General guidance for the UK · Council rules vary

Recycling centre or take-back

Where it usually goes

Recycling centre wood skip. Ask about treated or painted wood.

Too big or not suitable for a household bin. Take it to a recycling centre, a shop take-back point or book a collection.

Step by step

  1. Reuse first: sell it, give it away or donate it if it still works.
  2. Book your council’s bulky waste collection, or take it to your recycling centre (some need booking).
  3. If you pay someone to take it, check they are a registered waste carrier and get a receipt. Fly-tipped waste can be traced back to you.
