Gas bottles and cylinders: how to dispose of them safely

Barbecue, patio heater and camping gas cylinders must never go in the bin. Here is how to return or dispose of them.

Last reviewed 21 October 2026 · Applies to England; check local arrangements

Quick answer. Never put a gas cylinder in a household bin or a skip. Return refillable bottles to the supplier or a stockist, and ask your council about anything else.

Why it matters

Even an “empty” cylinder can hold enough gas to explode when it is crushed in a bin lorry or heated at a waste site. Fires at waste sites and in collection vehicles are often caused by items like this.

Refillable bottles

Many larger gas bottles remain the property of the supplier. Look for the company name on the bottle and contact them or a stockist about returning it. You may get a deposit back.

Small disposable canisters

Small camping and blowtorch canisters are usually not refillable. Ask your council or recycling centre how they want them handled. Some sites have a dedicated cage or area.

Clearances

If a gas bottle is part of a shed or garage clearance, tell the collector before they arrive. Many will not take cylinders, so set them aside for the supplier.
